Anna Halma, daughter of Fred and Bertha (Boscaljon) Kooima, was born December 11, 1927, on a farm near Inwood, Iowa. She attended school through the 8th grade. Anna married George Halma on her 20th birthday, December 11, 1947, at the First Reformed Church of Inwood. Together they farmed for a few years and then moved to California and later the couple returned to Inwood. In addition to caring for the family, Anna also worked outside the home. She spent several years working for the West Lyon Herald, 20 years as a secretary for Schoeneman Brothers Lumber, and 20 years as an aide at Fellowship Village.
Anna Halma will be remembered for her deep love of family, faith, and hospitality. Children held a special place in her heart, and she expressed her love most often around the table, where her Sunday dinners were a treasured tradition. Family especially looked forward to her roast beef and fried chicken, meals that brought everyone together and made her home feel like the center of warmth and comfort.
Anna’s door was always open, and a fresh pot of coffee was never far away. She delighted in welcoming others, whether for a meal, a visit, or simply a quiet moment of conversation. That spirit of connection was reflected in her weekly coffee time with her siblings, a cherished tradition that began in 1973 and continued faithfully until just two weeks before her passing.
She valued fellowship and community, belonging to the Inwood Coffee Grounds ladies coffee group and the American Legion Auxiliary. Anna was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church of Inwood, where her faith guided her daily life. She was active in the Martha Circle and the Serendipity Bible Study, finding joy in service, learning, and shared devotion.
Anna is survived by her children, Wayne (Becky) Halma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Karen (Jack) Cody of Renner, South Dakota, Kathy Van Ningen of Bismark, North Dakota, Mary (Spud) Grotewold, Barbara (Allen) Hassebroek, and Richard (Paula) Halma, all three of Inwood; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren with another one on the way; sister Marilyn (Lorn) Rus of Rock Valley, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Ahva Halma of Brandon, South Dakota; and sister-in-law, Rena Cannegieter of Rock Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bertha; husband, George; son, Gary Halma; grandsons, Jamie Halma and Ryan Halma; great-granddaughter, Britton McCarty; son-in-law, Paul Van Ningen; infant brother, William Kooima; brothers, Kenny (Dora) Kooima and Rodney (Bonnie) Kooima; sister, Henrietta (Bob) Siemonsma; and several in-laws.
