HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Avis Sunderman, 98, of Hawarden, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.

Private inurnment will be at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden next to her first husband Leland Blomberg.

Avis was born to Leonard and Edith (Fickbohm) Buum on June 13, 1927, in Union County, South Dakota. She attended 2 country schools and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1945. Avis attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City, Iowa and worked at Alcester State Bank.

Avis was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester. She married Leland Blomberg, Jr. at a home wedding on August 23, 1947. They farmed near Hawarden until Leland’s death on January 28, 1980. The couple had transferred their church membership to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden in 1960, where Avis taught Sunday School for several years and was a member of the Ladie’s Aide.

Following Leland’s death, Avis cared for an elderly lady in Viborg, South Dakota and in the spring of 1983, she began working for Earl May Nursery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for 8 years. She later managed a Super 8 Motel and then worked at a childcare center.

Avis married Glen Sunderman in January of 1984. She returned back to the farm in 1992 and lived there until moving into Hawarden in September of 2002. Avis loved her flowers, and doing embroidery and puzzles.

She is survived by her children, Lois Osendorf, Diane Fair and her husband Robert of Trophy Club, Texas, James Blomberg of rural Hawarden, and Glenn Blomberg and his wife Sabine of Chatsworth, Georgia; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leland; siblings; and a grandchild.
