Betty De Bruin

Rock Valley, IA: Betty Lou De Bruin, 77, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1, at 12:00 PM at Grace Community Church of Rock Valley with Pastor Joseph Terrell officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Following the graveside service, there will be a lunch at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, August 31, at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Betty Lou De Bruin, daughter of Dick and Minnie (Van Ravensway) Vander Linden, was born August 15, 1941, in Sioux Center, Iowa. Betty worked several years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Valley Manor (Whispering Heights) in Rock Valley, Iowa. On June 11, l994, Betty was united in marriage with John De Bruin at Grace Community Church in Rock Valley.

Betty enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. She and John made wonderful memories on their trips to Nashville, Washington DC, and Alaska. She also loved traveling to visit her children and grandchildren. Betty was always lifted up by music, and she adored many classic country favorites as well as traditional gospel hymns. Some of her children’s best memories are of hearing Mom singing in the kitchen. She was an active member of Grace Community Church. She appreciated the fellowship of weekly Bible Study and, later, gospel sing-a-longs with her sisters at the nursing home.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 24 years, John De Bruin of Rock Valley; her children: Doug (Bonnie) Vande Hoef of Windom, MN, Randy Vande Hoef of Orange City, IA, Bob (Nancy) Vande Hoef of Sioux Falls, SD, Barb (Mark) Van Grootheest of Long Beach, CA, Darwin (Kara) Vande Hoef of Seal Beach, CA, and Susan Vande Hoef of Austin, TX; her daughter-in-law, Jill (Joel) Steenhoven of Dakota Dunes, SD; her 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Her stepchildren: Laura Hoogestraat of Pierce, NE, Mike (Leah) De Bruin of Hawarden, IA, Darin De Bruin of Canton, SD, and Heidi (Scott) Bouvette of Luxemburg, WI; her 9 step grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jason Vande Hoef; her parents, Dick and Minnie Vander Linden; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Albert and Hattie De Bruin, her mother-in-law Rena Vande Hoef, her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Gertrude and Pete Davelaar, Johanna and Vernon Sandbulte, and Wilma and Frances Baatz; and her step son-in-law, Dave Hoogestraat; step great granddaughter, Maddlyn Brandt.
