HAWARDEN, IOWA – Carol Nohava-Kinney, 79, of Hawarden, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden with a luncheon to follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family requests memorials be directed to the Hawarden United Methodist Church in Carol’s memory.

Carol Lavonne Nohava-Kinney was born March 10, 1939 in Scotland, South Dakota, the daughter of Howard and Beulah (Curl) Gunn. She graduated from High School and attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Carol married Harvey Emil Nohava August 12, 1961 in Tyndall, South Dakota. They lived in Rapid City for one year before moving to Scotland. They moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1980 when they purchased the Sales Company of Hawarden. They also sold Conklin Products. Harvey died suddenly on May 4, 1993.

Carol married Jim Kinney on July 8, 1998. Jim and Carol made their home in Hawarden. Jim died on March 27, 2012.

Carol was a very active member of the United Methodist Church, being in the UMW, serving as a treasurer, and in the Clown Group. She was a member of the PEO and the Hawarden American Legion Auxiliary and worked at the Hawarden Hospital Thrift Store. Carol was always busy sewing, quilting, gardening, or tending to her flowers. She liked to fish, be busy in the kitchen baking cakes, and entertaining. She especially loved to play cards with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey and Malinda of Hawarden and Bryan and Brenda of Hawarden; her sister, Peggy Thranum and Roland of Freeman, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Lori Gunn of Fairbanks, Alaska; 9 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and Jim’s family: daughters, Dawn (Larry) Grad, Madison, South Dakota, Cheryl (Earl) Vesely, Wood, South Dakota, Karen (Ron) Brandt, Lead, South Dakota, Gayle (Dan) Spielmann, Sioux Falls, Mary Jo Barnett-Witt (Russ), Sioux Falls, Deb (Jim) Cooper, Hartford, South Dakota, sons, Mark Kinney, Spokane, Washington, Kevin Kinney, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joseph Kinney, Sioux Falls, Chris (Jody) Kinney, Cottage Grove, Minnesota, son-in-law, Larry (Leanne) Fosdick, Sioux Falls, brother, Gene (Peggy) Kinney, Rochester, New York, step-family, daughter, Shelly (Bartlett) Crozier, Sioux Falls; 30 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Gale Gunn.
