Delbert Kannegieter

George, IA: Delbert H. Kannegieter, 89, of George, Iowa, died Monday, March 13, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in George. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 17, at 11:00 AM at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George with Pastor Bryan Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery of George. Visitation, with the family present, will be Friday, March 17, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the church.

Delbert Harold Kannegieter was born January 24, 1928, at Willow Lake, SD the son of Albert & Bertha (Bruns) Kannegieter. In 1934, Delbert and his family moved to a farm north of Little Rock, IA where he attended country school. In 1940, they moved to a farm east of George, IA and in 1965 moved to their present farm west of George. He was united in marriage to Gladys Hilbrands on May 15, 1954, at George. Delbert attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in George and was an active member of the senior Bible study group. He enjoyed many things in life: camping, reading, vegetable gardening, growing flowers, bird watching, home grown buttered popcorn and family get togethers. He was a lifelong farmer and a member of the National Farmers Organization serving on all their commodity boards. It made him happy to pick up a new born, pure bred, baby Hereford calf and carry it to the old barn. His family was influenced by his faith, actions, kindness and wonderful sense of calm. He was a man of few words who believed in leaving all things better than he found them.

Delbert is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Gladys Kannegieter of George, IA; and five children, Joel (Norma) Kannegieter of Mitchell, SD; Laurel (Eric) McClelland of Denver, CO; Barton (Kris) Kannegieter of George, IA; Jim Kannegieter of George, IA; Sheila (Dr. Ken) Walsh of Bellevue, IA. Grandchildren, Shelly (David) Leicht; Dan Kannegieter; A.J. (fiancé, Shelby Bergman) Kannegieter; Bill McClelland; James (Ashley) McClelland; Jared, Ethan and Regan Kannegieter; Tara Bragg and Ashtyn Bragg. Great-grandchildren Sean, Tyler, Jaxson and Kolbe Leicht; Mike, Logan and Kaiti Kannegieter and Evelyn McClelland, along with sister Wanda Koger and sister-in-law Marlene Kannegieter. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Bonnie Kannegieter; infant son Russell Dean; brothers, Henry and Bob; sisters, Mattie Johnson, Agnas Kruse, Delores Colwell and Marvel Blum.
