Dennis Overweg, son of John and Hattie (Voetberg) Overweg, was born September 9, 1933, at Stickney, South Dakota. In the early 1950’s Dennis and his best friend, Charlie, heard about a family that immigrated to Sheldon, Iowa from the Netherlands and they had girls the boys’ age. So naturally, Dennis and Charlie made their way to Sheldon to introduce themselves to the young women, and the rest is history as Dennis began dating Gertrude Van Olst. In June of 1955, Dennis was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in March of 1957. Three short months after returning home, Dennis was united in marriage with Gertrude at the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon on June 12, 1957. To this union three children were born, Rick, Robert, and Denise.
Dennis obtained his GED from Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) in Sheldon in 1973. He furthered his education at Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, Iowa, receiving an Associate of Arts in 1976. During these years, Dennis and family made their home in Rock Valley, Iowa. In 1988, Dennis and Gert moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dennis owned and operated Overweg Plumbing and Heating until leaving the private sector to become a plumbing and heating technical instructor. From 1980-1982 he taught at NCC and from 1982 until retirement in 1998, Dennis taught at Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At night he would often teach union classes.
Dennis loved fishing, especially if it was with his grandkids and did a little golfing with his grandsons as well. He also enjoyed car shows and won many trophies with his 1930 Ford Model A. Dennis really appreciated outside work, especially gardening and flowers. He was deeply loved by his family and will be missed.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gert; 3 children, Rick (Pam) Overweg of Rock Valley, Robert Overweg of Sioux Falls, and Denise (David) Ohling of Rock Rapids, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Kent (Jennifer) Overweg, Jared (Sarah) Overweg, Brittany Overweg, Marcus (Cierra) Overweg, Josh (Laura) Ohling, and Alex Ohling; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Alma) Overweg; brothers-in-law, Darwin Kots and John Van Olst (Karmen Schoelerman); and sisters-in-law, Lucy Ymker and Eileen De Jong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hattie; sisters, Ann (John) Hilt, Harriet (John) Vande Kieft, and Marlene Kots; brother, Don (Ethel) Overweg; parents-in-law, John and Maria Van Olst; and in-law, Lambert and Kathleen Van Olst, Darryl and Marie Addink, Fred Ymker, Charlie De Jong, and Gerri and Raymond Reinke.
