Dennis Dean “Red” Groeneweg, son of Walter and Alta (Kats) Groeneweg, was born April 14, 1955 at Sioux Center, Iowa. Red grew up near Rock Valley, Iowa and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa. Dennis was united in marriage with Joan M. Boer on August 8, 1975 in Rock Valley. Together the couple made their home on a farm near Rock Valley where Red farmed. He also worked as a mechanic and could fix almost anything. In addition to his craft as a farmer and mechanic, Dennis belonged to the Rock Valley Gun Club where he served on the board and helped coach the Rock Valley Clay Crushers trap shooting team.
In his younger years, Dennis enjoyed archery, trapping and racing Hot Rods at Marion, South Dakota. As time went on, Red’s hobbies turned to gun collecting, hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. Most of these things were enjoyed with his Kats family cousins. Most of all though Dennis loved time with his grandchildren. Red enjoyed being social and knew a stranger for all about five minutes before he knew their life story and had made a new friend. Dennis loved God, family, friends, and the United States of America.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan; 3 children, Rose (Barry) Staples of Sheldon, Iowa, Miranda Groeneweg (David Fiech) of Inwood, Iowa, and Nathan (Heidi) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; 8 grandchildren, Isaiah, Chris, Cleo, Caleb, Blake, Gabe, Ellymae, and Rhett; mother, Alta Groeneweg; brother, Leon Robert (Cheri) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; sister, Laura (Greg) Getting of Matlock, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Hank Blankespoor of Doon, Iowa.
