Biography

Doon, IA: Elroy Glenn Van Engen, 77, of Doon, Iowa, died Monday, July 9, 2018 at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12 at 10:30 AM at Doon United Reformed Church with Rev. John Vermeer officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery of Doon. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Wednesday, July 11 from 6:00-7:30 PM at Doon URC. Memorials may be given to Doon Christian School.
Elroy Glenn Van Engen, son of Garrie and Effie (Mulder) Van Engen, was born June 16, 1941 at Doon, Iowa. Elroy attended Doon Christian Grade School and graduated from Western Christian High School. Elroy proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy from January 1961-January 1963. On November 3, 1967 Elroy was united in marriage with Laura Schriever. Together the couple made their home in Doon. Elroy worked as a heavy equipment operator on road construction for Hyman Construction Company. Later on, in his employment, he worked as a supervisor in the Aggregate Division for Rohlins Construction Company.
Elroy’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Family gatherings were very important to him. He enjoyed fishing, raising and riding horses, hunting, and trapping. On Sunday afternoons he looked forward to playing hymns on the guitar. Elroy was a member of the American Legion in Doon and the Doon United Reformed Church.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Laura; 3 daughters, Lisa (Terry) Van Den Top of Hull, Iowa, Kimberly Van Engen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jana Van Engen of Doon; 3 grandchildren, Lindsay (Adam) Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa, Jeffrey (Leisa) Van Den Top of Tea, South Dakota, and Lacey Van Den Top of Hull; 2 sisters-in-law, Karolyn Van Engen of Sioux Center, Iowa, and LeeAnne Narum of Canton, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Harlan Schriever of Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Elroy in death were his parents, Garrie and Effie; 3 brothers, Gerald (Gert) Van Engen, Earl Van Engen, and Arnold Van Engen; father and mother-in-law, Harm and Maggie Schriever; and 2 brothers-in-law, Elmer Larson and Oliver Narum.
