Gary Arends

Hawarden, Iowa ~ Gary Arends, 56, of Hawarden, passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at his residence in Hawarden.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa. Graveside memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Beresford City Cemetery at Beresford, South Dakota with Rev. Barb Joy of the Hawarden United Methodist Church officiating.
Gary Francis Arends was born April 3, 1959 to Wesley and Eileen (Farley) Arends in Hawarden, Iowa. He attended school in Alcester, South Dakota until he moved to Hawarden with his parents at age 9.
He worked various jobs until his health started failing when he was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago. Gary collected matchbox cars and was an avid model builder.
He is survived by two sons, Clint and Glenn; 3 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Liz (John) Otten of Hawarden, Iowa, Jackie (Jim) Huizinga of Weslaco, Texas, and Marlene (Jack) Backer of Monroe, South Dakota; a brother, Wesley (Shirley) Arends of Blackhawk, Colorado; a brother-in-law, Dick Fleshner of Jefferson, South Dakota; and many nephews and nieces.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Patricia Arends and Bonnie Fleshner; and a brother in infancy.
