Gary Howard Gregg

Gary Gregg, 74, firstborn son of Glenn and LaVonne Gregg and loving husband of Carla Gregg, passed away unexpectedly at his home in rural Lawton, Iowa, on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. Gary’s family prefers memorials be directed to the EMS or Fire Department in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

Gary was born and raised in Hawarden, Iowa, and graduated from West Sioux High School. During his youth, Gary developed a lifelong love for working with his hands, especially working on his car and riding his motorcycle. Gary always had a love for horses, especially later with his work and play partner, quarter horse Bo. Team penning was a favorite activity.

Cattle feeding and management were the heart of Gary’s professional life. After attending Sioux Falls College and working at a Texas outfit to learn the cattle feeding business, he returned to his roots to work alongside his father. Together, they fed cattle and managed one of the first commercial feeders in Iowa. Gary’s exceptional knowledge and work ethic led him to manage commercial feedlots in Nebraska and Colorado. He later relocated to Iowa, where he continued his connection with the agriculture community by working with a local feed and fertilizer operation.

In 1972, Gary married Cindee Schwartzbaugh, and raised their daughters, Erika and Erin. Later, after that marriage ended, Gary found love again in 2003 when he met his wife Carla. After many adventures, they landed in rural Lawton where they had recently retired. He enjoyed and took pride in watching his grandchildren grow up and was proud to add the title of GREAT GRANDPA.

Gary’s intelligence, wit, and great personality left him with many friends across the country. Children and animals loved him immediately. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many members of the farming communities he served throughout his life.

Gary is survived by his wife Carla Gregg; his daughters, Erika (Gary) Fuentes and Erin Smailey (Troy Rankin); grandsons, Noah (Mae) and Micah (Abby) McWell, Tyce and Asher Smailey; and great-grandchildren, Kahleesi and Kazsius McWell and Isiah McWell; brother, Larry (Carol) Gregg; sister, Gayle Gregg; extended family, Jim (Annie) Reeves, Josi Reeves (Micheal Keene), Tasha Ray, Koji Reeves, Quera Keene, and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and LaVonne Gregg.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Grandpa Dute, Big Gar, Dad, you will live in our hearts.
