Geraldine Mae Van Bruggen, 91, of Seminole, Florida, a former resident of Okoboji, Iowa and Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Suncoast Hospice.
A family service was held in Largo, Florida. A Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2018 at the First Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting with the local arrangements. Geraldine was born on June 21, 1926 in Ireton, Iowa to Henry and Mae (Houlton) Poll. She graduated from the Ireton High School in 1944. After graduation, she attended Westmar College and taught 5th grade in Winnebago, Nebraska. Geraldine enrolled in the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1945, as a member of the Cadet Nursing Corp.
Geraldine married Ted Van Bruggen on September 30, 1948. She worked in hospitals in Le Mars, Sioux Center, Iowa City, and Vermillion. In 1968, Geraldine became the school nurse for the Vermillion School system, retiring in 1988.
Geraldine has been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, South Dakota, First Lutheran Church, Okoboji, Iowa and currently of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Largo, Florida.
Geraldine is survived by her husband, Ted of Seminole, Florida; daughter, Janet Hazen, Pinellas Park, Florida; son, Tom (Linda) Van Bruggen, Park Rapids, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and one on the way; 2 sisters, Helen Ver Hoeven, Ireton and Mary (Mike) Magan, Ada, Michigan; an aunt, Marjorie Johnson, Ireton; sister-in-law, Ann Van Bruggen, Hawarden, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and many brother and sister-in-laws.
