Geraldine Velores (Nilson) Schreur was born on August 10, 1931, in Union County, South Dakota, to parents Sigmund and Edna (Peck) Nilson. Geraldine passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024.
Geraldine married Tunies John Schreur at her parent’s farm in Union County on September 26th, 1948. Together, they worked hard and saved until they could buy their dream farm in rural Alcester. They moved to the farm on March 1st, 1969, after a winter of record snowfall with snowdrifts as high as telephone poles.
Geraldine’s greatest pride was the legacy of her family. She often quoted, “From we two came this crew.”
Geraldine and Tunies had a great love of the land and livestock. They nurtured those values with their children. Geraldine’s garden was full of vegetables, and her yard was full of flowers. One of her favorite memories was milking cows with her husband and children in their Grade A dairy. Geraldine loved to design and sew clothes for her family. She sewed the wedding dresses for her two daughters. Geraldine’s love of children extended beyond her family as she cared for over thirty foster children.
Geraldine was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Hawarden, IA. She and Tunies ensured all the children were baptized, confirmed, and attended church.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her beloved husband on June 27th, 2011. Geraldine and Tunies always said that they were blessed with their children. Their union led to five children, which led to sixteen grandchildren, which has led to thirty-three great-grandchildren, which led to six great-great-grandchildren, and growing. Their union has led to their extended family of eighty-nine and growing.
Geraldine is survived by her five children: Peggy (Dick) Akins of South Sioux City, NE; Gerrie (Kim) Murphy of Kearney, MO; Tuney (Anna Waldner) Schreur of Alcester, SD; Michael (Holly) Schreur of Canyon, TX; and Stuart (Charlotte) Schreur of Hawarden, IA.
Geraldine often found comfort in her favorite Bible verse Hebrew 13:5, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Blessed be her memory.
