Rock Valley, IA: Gilbert C. Hoogendoorn, 88, of Rock Valley, Iowa, formerly George, Iowa, died Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 14, at 2:00 PM at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Rock Valley with Rev. J.J. Witvoet officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be held Tuesday, January 13, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.
Gilbert Cornelius Hoogendoorn, son of Johannes Arie and Adrianna (Groeneweg) Hoogendoorn, was born July 10, 1937, on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa. On his 19th birthday, July 10, 1956, Gilbert was united in marriage to Loraine Van Beek at her parent’s home near Hudson, South Dakota. The couple made their home for a brief time in Hudson, and then Rock Rapids Iowa before settling on a farm near George, Iowa for 45 years, until moving to Rock Valley in 2003.
In addition to his farming operation, Gilbert also drove truck for many years for various companies. He served 8 years as a Lyon County Supervisor as well as time spent on many other boards. Gilbert was a lifelong member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Rock Valley.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Loraine; 3 children, LaRae (William) Fluit of Alvord, Iowa, Gywen (Connie) Hoogendoorn of Bradenton, Florida, and Elwyn (Wanda) Hoogendoorn of George; 13 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Coba Van Tilburg and Marge Mantel; and 3 sisters-in-law, Mary Hoogendoorn, Betty Hoogendoorn; Ada Hoogendoorn; and numerous Van Beek in-laws.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Marion; and 3 brothers, Joel, Arvin, and Marion Hoogendoorn.
