George, IA: Gladys Jean Kannegieter, 90, of George, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital of Rock Rapids, Iowa. A funeral service will be held Friday, January 6, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the Tabernacle Baptist Church of George with Pastor Bryan Anderson officiating. The service will be livestreamed at https://tabernaclechurch.com/live-stream. Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery of George. Visitation, with the family present, will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church.
Gladys Jean Kannegieter was born June 21, 1932, at her parent’s farm west of George, IA. The daughter of John & Tillie (Hansman) Hilbrands, she grew up on the farm and attended Wheeler No. 2 country school. Gladys married Delbert Kannegieter on May 15, 1954, and they lived on a farm east of George until they moved to the family farm west of George where she and Delbert farmed and raised livestock.
Gladys enjoyed playing piano & organ, sewing, canning, baking, vegetable gardening, growing and arranging flowers, camping and Sunday family dinners. Her faith was very important to her, she taught Sunday school classes at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church for 12 years and was in the ladies Bible circle. Gladys attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in George and had been an active member of the Senior Bible study group.
In 2017 her husband Delbert passed away after 62 years of marriage, and she continued to live on the farm with her son Jim. Gladys passed away at Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA, on Wednesday December 21, 2022, at the age of 90.
Gladys is survived by five children, Joel (Norma) Kannegieter of Mitchell, SD; Laurel (Eric) McClelland of Denver, CO; Barton (Kris) Kannegieter of George, IA; Jim Kannegieter of George, IA; Sheila (Dr. Ken) Walsh of Bellevue, IA. Grandchildren, Shelly (David) Leicht; Dan Kannegieter; AJ (Shelby) Kannegieter; Bill McClelland; James (Ashley) McClelland; Jared, Ethan & Regan Kannegieter; Tara Bragg (Fiancé, Patrick McVeigh), and Ashtyn Bragg. Great-Grandchildren, Sean, Tyler, Jaxson & Kolbe Leicht; Mike, Logan, Kaiti Kannegieter, Lyndy Kannegieter; Evelyn & Lily McClelland; Harrison McVeigh. Great-Great-Grandchildren, Cedar Olson & Elias Santos. Sister-in-law, Wanda Koger of George, IA. Numerous Nieces and Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Tillie Hilbrands; infant brother; husband, Delbert; infant son, Russell; and Great-Grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caleb, and Liam Kannegieter.
