Rock Valley, IA: Harlan Duane Kooima, 72, of Rock Valley, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley following injuries sustained in a farming accident. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 1, at 10:00 AM at Trinity Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Pastor Ben Cross officiating. The service can be livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/4077519. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be held Monday, June 30, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Trinity CRC.

Harlan Duane Kooima was born on July 8, 1952, in Le Mars, Iowa. The son of Pete and Ann (De Boer) Kooima. He married Ellen Sluis in Edgerton, Minnesota on July 31, 1987. Together they were blessed with five children and one grandchild. His granddaughter, Blaykley, was the joy of his life.
Harlan served in the Iowa Air National Guard from June 1970 through June of 1976. He lived his entire life on the family farm he grew up on near Rock Valley, Iowa. He had a deep love for farming and trucking and all things agriculture. He had an excellent memory and was the family historian. He loved hearing and sharing stories with his family and many friends, and no one was ever a stranger.
He loved going for drives and traveling and family vacations were always a highlight for him.
He was a faithful charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and attended Bible studies. He knew his Bible well and God’s love was real to him.
Harlan passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the age of 72 years, 11 months, and 14 days.
Harlan is survived by his wife of almost 38 years, Ellen; son, Jonathan Kooima of Rock Valley; daughters, Jeanie Kooima and Jenalee Kooima both of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Jamison (Dalli and granddaughter Blaykley) Kooima of Scott’s Bluff, Nebraska; and son, Jeremy Kooima of Rock Valley. As well as his siblings: brother, Sebert Kooima of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister, Trudy Huisken of Rock Valley; sister, Marlene (Ron) Kuyper of Rock Valley; brother, Ken (Ruth) Kooima of Rock Valley; and brother, Don (Sherry) Kooima of Hudsonville, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Ann Kooima; his brother-in-law, Ben Huisken; and sister-in-law, Ann Kooima.
