Harold Van Berkum

Rock Valley, IA: Harold J. Van Berkum, 77, of Rock Valley, Iowa died Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Hegg Memorial Health Center after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 31, at 2:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley with Pastor Brian Anderson officiating. A celebration of life reception will follow at Koldy’s in Rock Valley. Private family inurnment will be held prior to services. Visitation, with the family present will be Thursday, March 30, from 6:00-7:30 PM at Porter Funeral Home.

HJ Van Berkum was born September 17, 1939 in Rock Valley, IA, son of Luke and Tilda (Remmerde) Van Berkum. After serving his country in Korea, HJ returned to Rock Valley and later married Marge Bouma on March 10, 1961. Together they lived in Rock Valley where he was employed by Sioux County as a Large Equipment Operator. While working for Sioux County HJ and Marge also established HJ & MJ Mobile Home Park. HJ “retired” in 2000, however he remained busy with the trailer park and multiple “last” projects.

Surviving relatives include his children Vicki Barnes of Fayetteville, NC; Kristi Moore of Rock Valley; Kelli and her husband Dan Groeneweg of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren: Nathan (Sonya) Barnes of Raeford, NC; Jamie Groeneweg of Rapid City, SD; Willie James (Shannon) Barnes of Colorado Springs, CO; Kendra Groeneweg of Rapid City, SD; Danielle Moore of Beaverton, OR; Alex Groeneweg of Sioux Falls, SD; Donald Moore of Pierre, SD; Jonathan Moore of Portland, OR; his mother, Tilda Van Berkum of Rock Valley; and 4 siblings: Clifford (Phyllis) Van Berkum of Swea City, IA; Lois Rensink of Hospers, IA; Russell (Joyce) Van Berkum of Rock Valley, IA; David (Marley) of Sioux City, IA.

HJ was preceded in death by his wife Marge Van Berkum and father Luke Van Berkum.
