Harriet Bradley

March 17, 1934 — July 8, 2015

Doon, Iowa: Harriet Bradley, 81, of Rock Valley formerly of Doon went to her ultimate home with her Lord on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. She fought a gracious and hope-filled battle with cancer since August 2014. Visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015, from 12:00-1:30 P.M. at the Doon United Reformed Church. Burial will follow the visitation at 2:00 P.M. at the Hillside Cemetery in Doon. Memorial service will be held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Doon United Reformed Church with Rev. Shane Lems officiating. In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials be directed to the Doon Christian School. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Harriet was born March 17, 1934. She married John Herbert Van Engen on December 8, 1950. Herb and Harriet lived most of their life farming in rural Doon. From 1956 to 1960, they lived in Terra Ceia, NC. Together they raised their six children with love in the fear of the Lord. Herb passed away August 4, 1983, at the age of 54.

Harriet moved to Doon shortly after Herb’s death. She worked as a CNA in the Sioux Center Care Center and was known as a loving caregiver and hard worker. She immersed herself in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She had a saying on her fridge that said, “Bloom where you are planted,” and she lived that as a model for her family.

On June 9, 2001, she married George Bradley. The two spent their time together traveling the continent and enjoying each other. They loved helping others. Many were blessed with their service in Cary, MS, Volunteers in Christian Service, and church ministries. Always looking out for George, Harriet insisted on moving to the Four Seasons Center in Rock Valley in February, 2015, where they have already made many friends. Their lives and love were a source of delight and a wonderful role model for her family. George is deeply loved by Harriet’s family and truly became Dad and Grandpa.

Those left to cherish Harriet’s memory are her husband, George; children, Gail Andringa, Carol (Clyde) Lems, Allen (Judy) Van Engen, Wanda (Allen) Koedam, Jay (Judy) Van Engen, and Roy (Cathy) Van Engen; brother, Henry (Karen) Kraayenbrink; sister, Judy (Joe) Van Tol; 21 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 3 stepchildren, Dan (Jacqui) Bradley, Terry (Barb) Bradley, and Connie Bradley; 5 step-grandchildren; and 9 step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Herbert Van Engen; sister, Lydia Van Maanen; brother, Gerrit Kraayenbrink; son-in-law, Alan Andringa; grandson, Kirk Van Engen; and great-grandson, Tristan Bootsma.
