Herman "Jr." John Stubbe

Herman “Jr.” Stubbe, age 96, of George, Iowa, died Monday, August 25, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in George.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of George, Iowa, with Pastor Jesse Sternke officiating. Procession to Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George for the inurnment will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the church. A luncheon and time of visitation with the family will follow the Memorial Service. The Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family prefers memorials be directed to the Herman and Eva Stubbe Scholarship Fund at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, Iowa.

Herman “Jr.” Stubbe was born December 4, 1928, southwest of George to John and Margaret (Woelber) Stubbe. He was raised on the family farm southwest of George. He was united in marriage to Eva Schmidt on August 10, 1948, at the E.U.B. Church in George.

They resided in George until 1950, after which they moved to a farm three miles north of Matlock where they farmed for 14 years. Their family increased with the birth of their two sons, Jim and Jack. They later moved to the home place of Eva’s birth where they farmed for another 14 years. During that time, Herman also started in the newspaper business, with successful careers for the Sioux City Journal and the Des Moines Register. In 1976, they moved to Sheldon and in 1979 moved to the home they built in George.

Herman was active in church work, teaching Sunday School and holding many offices. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in George.

Herman is survived by his two sons, Jim and Nicky Stubbe of Shorewood, Minnesota and Jack Stubbe of George, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jonie (Kelly) Wagener and Jackie (Eric) Wagener, all of Waconia, Minnesota, Jamie (Doug) Peters and Matthew (Rachel) Stubbe, all of Olathe, Kansas; two step-grandchildren, Jane Acree of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Mark Lammert of Minnetonka, Minnesota; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Stubbe of George, Iowa and Henry Stubbe of Vancouver, Washington; one sister, Kathryn Klaahsen of Sibley, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Stubbe; daughter-in-law, Alethea Stubbe; sisters-in-law, Pauline Stubbe and Shirley Stubbe; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Klaahsen and Harvey J. Schmidt; and nieces, Jan Stubbe and Marianne Groen.
