Hubertha "Bertha" Joan Statema

Ireton, Iowa: Hubertha “Bertha” Joan Statema (nee Brands), 88, of rural Ireton, Iowa, died peacefully on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the home of her son of rural Alton, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 10:30 am at Ireton Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Nathan Kuperus officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation with the family will be 5:00-7:00 pm on Monday, September 21, 2026, also at Ireton Christian Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be directed to the Ireton Christian School. The Statema family is under the care of Porter Funeral Home of Ireton. Bertha Statema was born on February 13, 1938, to Gerrit and Bertha (Van Zanten) Brands, in Rock Valley, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Peter Statema on August 4, 1960, in Rock Valley, Iowa.

After graduation from high school, Bertha worked at the Rock Valley Bee and Canton Hospital. However, becoming a farmer’s wife was a role she would enjoy the most. Bertha also worked at the Hawarden Hillcrest Nursing Home for 30 years. She was a member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. Bertha enjoyed the simple things in life like attending her grandchildren’s events, sitting outside, and road trips (both near and far) with Pete.

Survivors include four children: Linda (David) Renes of Sioux Falls, SD; Jeff (Gina) Statema of LeMars, IA; David Statema of Alton, IA; Lisa Statema of Dakota Dunes, SD and four grand children and great-grandchildren. Kelli (Brian) Jurgensen – Elijah and Jonathan; Veronica (Zach) Rodman – Ellie and Jordan; Sam (Logan) Renes; Allegra Statema. A sister, Johanna Westra and two sisters-in-law; Grace Brands and Barbara Brands.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Pete; a sister, Rena Brands; and two brothers, Gerrit Brands Jr. and Cornie Brands; and her in-laws: Don Westra; John & Gert Statema, Hank & Ann Zomermaand; Art & Geraldine Statema; Clarence & Beulah Statema; Jim & Betty Sikma; Frank & Iola Statema; Otto & Madelyne Huizenga; Bill & Geneva Burggraaf; Julius & Priscilla De Jong.
