Janice Warner passed from this earth on November 10th, 2025, at Friendly Horizons in Sioux Center, Iowa. She was 78 years of age and had been living with dementia for several years. She made her home at Friendly Horizons for two years and five months. Jan’s family will be forever grateful for the loving care they provided.
Jan’s early years were spent living in many places. Her parents, James and Dorothy Skogman traveled through the US as her father worked for natural gas pipelines. Jan took advantage of every pond, swamp or stream they lived by to explore, fish and collect anything she could put in a jar or a bucket to take home. She loved her critters as her mother cringed with every new arrival. Jan’s love of the outdoors and animals continued throughout her lifetime. She liked to fish and of course, made sure to catch and release. She loved her dogs [Taffy, Toby and Zoe] and many, many cats, fish and birds. Jan also had a great love for growing flowers. She toiled endlessly in her yard growing a beautiful collection of blooming plants. The lilies in her garden were especially her favorites. Jan passed on her love of plants to her granddaughter, Tova. They were able to spend hours together digging and planting. Jan was also an excellent baker and searched through cookbooks to find new recipes to try. She loved to share the results of her baking with co-workers and family. Jan was a friend to any animal that wandered into her yard. She once explained that she “was doing Gods work” by feeding them. She willed be missed many.
Janice graduated from West Sioux High School and was employed by Coilcraft for all of her working years, retiring after 42 years. She enjoyed her retirement immensely. She was active in the First Baptist Church and enjoyed volunteering and shopping at the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store.
Jan is survived by her son, Brian [Kristi] Warner; her sister, Susan Skogman along with her favorite brother-in-law [as she liked to joke] Dan Shepherd. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Kevin [Khallie] Warner and Tova [Marcos] Lopez; and four great grandchildren, Braylon, Kasen, Bentley and Audrey Lopez, all of her family living in Hawarden.
Graveside service for her family and friends will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden with Pastor Carolyn Salberg officiating. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
