Rock Valley, IA: Joan Van Maanen, 92, of Rock Valley, Iowa, went to her heavenly home on Friday, August 15, 2025. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 25, at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. The service can be livestreamed at https://www.christianworldmedia.com/livechannel/firstcrcrv. Burial will follow the service at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. A visitation with family present will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 AM at First CRC.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Rock Valley Christian School or Western Christian High School.
Joan Van Maanen was born September 11, 1932, on the family farm southwest of Rock Valley, Iowa, daughter of Tunis and Alice (Boote) Van Veldhuizen. After graduating from Western Christian High School, Jo attended Calvin College and became a teacher at Rock Valley Christian School. Joan married Gerrit A. Van Maanen on June 11, 1954. Together they lived on the Van Maanen family farm until retiring to Rock Valley in 1989. Gerrit went to his heavenly home on September 20, 2010.
Joan enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, gardening, baking, and volunteering at Hope Haven Wheelchair International Ministries. She was a lifetime member of First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley where she served as church librarian, taught Sunday School, and attended Ladies Bible Study.
Joan is survived by her 5 children, Sherry (Fred) Farr of Chino Hills, California, Karen (Steve) Groen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Arlys (Rick) Jasper of Ontario, California, Don (Colleen) Van Maanen of Lynden, Washington, and Connie (Mike) Grevengoed of Hull, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Andrea (Derrick) Johnson, Jerrod (Michelle) Bonnema, Laura (Jeff) Lyng, Carrie (Nick) Ellens, Emily (Dan) Kobes, Kyle (Keirstyn) Jasper, Brett Jasper, Michael (Megan) Van Maanen, Courtney (John) Machulak, Jonathon (Kayla) Grevengoed, Justin (Katrina) Grevengoed, and Riley Grevengoed; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Claretta (John) Lobbes and Elaine Bolkema, both of Rock Valley; brother, Ron (Gert) Van Veldhuizen of Rock Valley; and sister-in-law, Marvis Van Maanen of Lakewood, California.
Preceding Joan in death were her parents, Tunis and Alice Van Veldhuizen; husband, Gerrit A. Van Maanen; grandson, Eric Bonnema; brother, Ed Van Veldhuizen; brother-in-law, Leroy Bolkema; and sister-in-law, Winifred Van Veldhuizen.
