John Harlan Vande Vegte

Rock Valley, IA: John H. Vande Vegte, 80, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Friday, November 6, 2020 at his son’s home in Rock Valley where he was being cared for by his loving wife. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, November 10, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Henry Lengkeek officiating. Burial will be held prior to the service at 10:15 AM at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Public visitation, with no family present, will be held Monday, November 9, from 2:00-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given.

 

   John Harlan Vande Vegte, son of Henry and Roelena (Driesen) Vande Vegte, was born November 6, 1940 at Rock Valley, Iowa. John attended school through the 8th grade and then stayed home to pursue his love of farming. He married Judy Van Roekel at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa in 1961. Together the couple made their home on a farm near Rock Valley. John was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa.

 

   John’s love for farming ran deep. He was born with farming in his blood. As a farmer, he understood that there was a time for every season. John knew and trusted every season was in the hands of God. In addition to being a crop farmer, he raised cattle, hogs and quarter horses. He loved all kinds of animals. John also enjoyed going to the elevator for coffee and to share conversation with fellow farmers.

 

   John is survived by his wife, Judy of Rock Valley; son, Henry (Kathy) Vande Vegte of Rock Valley; daughter, Sharon (Aaron) Nelson of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen (Arie) Byl of Sioux Center, Iowa; sister-in-law, Geraldine Vande Vegte of Inwood, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Art (Anita) Van Ravenhorst of Sioux Center.

 

  He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Roelena; brother, Norman Vande Vegte; sister, Mary Anne Van Ravenhorst; and 2 sisters in infancy.
