Karon Marie Smith

Karon Marie (Weyer) Smith, 76, of Flandreau, South Dakota, formerly of Hudson, South Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Riverview Healthcare in Flandreau, South Dakota.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa. A Prayer Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Carolyn Salberg of the Hudson Lutheran Church officiating. Karon, a twin, was born on September 2, 1949, in Hawarden, Iowa, to Bernard and Betty (Harkness) Weyer. She grew up in Hawarden. She was baptized and confirmed at the Hawarden United Methodist Church. She graduated from West Sioux High School.

Karon married Gary Smith on November 28, 1969. To this union, 2 children were born. They lived in Hudson for over 40 years. They enjoyed camping in their RV with family and were looking forward to retirement until Gary’s passing in 2010. Karon worked numerous jobs in those 40 years. She was Finance Officer for the City of Hudson, operated an in-home daycare and was a dietary aide at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center, Iowa where she took great pride in her work and had many special relationships with the residents.

Survivors include her children, Paula (Greg) Swanson of Mitchell, South Dakota and Amber Smith of Akron, Iowa; grandchildren, Macy (Colten) Runge of Volga, South Dakota, Tanner Swanson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lizzy and Jack Toben of Akron, Iowa; her siblings, Larry “Butch” (Sue) Weyer of Hawarden, Kay (Dennis) Moller of Alcester, South Dakota, Scott Weyer of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mark (Pam) Weyer of Alcester, South Dakota.

Karon was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; mother, Betty Weyer; father, Bernard Weyer; stepmother, Myra (Doty) Weyer; brother, Kevin Weyer; and sister, Sherry Olander.
