Kenneth John Schmidt

HAWARDEN, IOWA – Kenneth John Schmidt, 60, of Hawarden, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020 at his residence under hospice care.

   Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. A private family graveside service will take place at the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden with Rev. Joshua Lowe of the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS officiating. Public viewing, with no family present, and limited to 10 people at a time practicing social distancing, will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

   Kenneth John Schmidt was born June 20, 1959 in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Donald and Marlys (Larson) Schmidt. He graduated from the West Sioux High School in 1978.

   Ken married Carla Bolluyt on April 20, 1979 at Hawarden. They made their home at Hawarden where Ken farmed and later did a variety of jobs. His last employment was driving truck for Marv Kaskie in Hawarden. He enjoyed working with old tractors and collecting and selling guns. He was a past member of the Hawarden Fire Department.

   He is survived by his wife, Carla; four children, Stephanie Hofer and husband Chris and their children, Jackson, Parker, and Mason of Beresford, South Dakota, Steven Schmidt and his special friend Jill Jacobs and his children Christopher and Taylor and her children Erica, Jaden, and Ani of Hawarden, Sarah Mora and fiancé Jose Topete and their children, Antwun, Dominic, Eli, and Riley of Hawarden, and Kendra Schelling and husband Trevor and their children, Paisley, Kambrie, and Asher of Hawarden; his sister, Mary Reppe and husband Larry and their children Adam and Brian of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and his mother-in-law, Clara Bolluyt of Hawarden.

   Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marlys; his father-in-law, Bud Bolluyt; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
