Hudson, South Dakota: Leota Kay Solberg passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Alcester Care & Rehab Center in Alcester, South Dakota after celebrating early, her 83rd birthday. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 13, at 10:30 AM at the Hudson Lutheran Church with Pastor Carolyn Salberg officiating. Burial will follow at Eden Cemetery of Hudson. Visitation with the family present will be held Friday, September 12, at the Hudson Lutheran Church from 5:30-7:30 PM with a prayer service to follow at 7:30 PM.
Leota Kay (Lindstedt) Solberg was born to Thure and Ethel (Yegge) Lindstedt on September 28, 1942, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, in a farmhouse and baptized at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She graduated from Wessington Springs High School and went on to attend Nettleton College for business and started working as a bookkeeper at 1st National Bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
On August 5, 1962, she was united in marriage to Merle Solberg and the couple shared 52 wonderful years together. As a devoted farm wife, she was actively involved in her community, contributing to the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, being a 4-H leader, and served on the board of the nursing home in Hudson. Kay was an active member of Hudson Lutheran Church where she served on the council, was past president of WELCA, and spent 25 years as the church secretary.
Her dedication extended beyond her church and community roles. Kay was a distributor of Shaklee products and became certified in cake decorating. On the farm she was a vital partner, helping with the farming operation, feeding the hired farmhands, hauling corn, and working alongside her mother, Ethel, on their rug looming business.
Kay found joy in dancing at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls where she met Merle. In 2007, Kay and Merle began spending winters at Trophy Gardens in Alamo, Texas. She enjoyed playing cards, going on bus tours, and was well known for her baking, especially her cinnamon rolls, bread, and lefse. Kay was involved with canning, having a garden and processing sweet corn which brought many wonderful memories. She had memorable vacations such as an Alaskan Cruise, visiting family in the Scandinavian countries and many areas of the United States.
Kay is survived by her daughter, Aprilsue King (Michael Stalcup) of Hudson, South Dakota; son and daughter-in-law; grandchildren, Derrek (Kelci) Solberg of Loveland, Colorado, Shannon King, Shawn King, and Jayden King (Ivy Kraft) all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jeremy King of Brandon, South Dakota; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Solberg, Hunter Solberg, and Noah King; and nieces, Peggy Farnum of Littleton, Colorado, Penny Moore and Linda (Bob) Remy both of Great Falls, Montana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thure and Ethel Lindstedt; husband, Merle Solberg; sisters, Rosellen Quamen and Corenne Holmes; and brother, Ivan Lindstedt.
Kay will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her dedication to her community, and her generous spirit. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
