Lois Hazel Bergdale, 97, of Hawarden, died February 24, 2024, in hospice care at Hillcrest Healthcare in Hawarden after only a brief couple weeks arrival. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at the Hawarden First Baptist Church, with Rev. Stuart Schreur officiating and Rev. Scott Conner of Alcester Baptist providing prayer and scripture. A time of visiting and lunch will follow the memorial service. Private family burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Arrangements are under the care of Porter Funeral Home.
Lois was born on December 7, 1926, in Kimball, S.D., to George E. and Minnie Hazel Hopkins Gould. She moved to Verdel, NE at age two and attended grade school there. She moved to Hawarden in 1938, and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1943.
She married Russell Oliver “Busch” Bergdale on August 20, 1944, in South Sioux City, NE. The couple lived and raised their three children, Barbara George, Larry Russell, and Lindsay John, on the Bergdale family farm in Union County, SD. Lois was baptized on May 27, 1956 at the Alcester Baptist Church, where she and Russell attended for several years. The couple moved to Hawarden in November 1983.
Lois and Russell loved Twins baseball and would travel to many games. They were always present at important family events. Russell passed away on March 29, 1993 in Hawarden. Lois had over 30 years of more living to do and adventures to be had. She made frequent winter trips to Arizona, and she always traveled with her daughter Barb and son-in-law Bruce Waterman.
She was a member of Hawarden First Baptist Church and a faithful volunteer with the Hawarden Senior Center, volunteered at West Sioux Elementary School as a reading tutor, and served as Church Mission Treasurer for many years. Her faith was core to her through all life events. She lived the virtues that are taught in the Bible every day. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” – Galatians 5:22-23. These attributes were how Lois lived her life, and she blessed everyone around her over her 97 years with her presence. She moved to Oakhill Assisted Living in August 2021 and moved to Crown Pointe in Sioux Center during September 2023. She was well cared for and loved by many at both facilities before her move on February 8 to Hillcrest.
Lois is being reunited in heaven with her parents, George and Hazel Gould, her brother, Dale Gould, two infant brothers, Gerald Edgar and Lyle Everet, her husband, Russell Bergdale, and her grandchildren, Abria Lynd Bergdale and Scott Russell Bergdale.
