Johnny’s family prefers in lieu of flowers, that donation be made to the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 99-312 Moanalua Road, Aiea, Hawaii 96701.
Johnny, the son of Paul and Clayre Scott, was born December 3rd, 1947, at the Hawarden Hospital in Hawarden, Iowa. He was the youngest of four siblings and with his birth, the family was complete.
Johnny lived on a farm in Union County, and attended a country school near Hawarden, Iowa until he was in 3rd grade. He enjoyed his early school years, and grew especially fond of his teacher, who also happened to be his mom, Clayre Scott.
At the end of 3rd grade, Johnny moved to Hudson, South Dakota, where he attended Hudson Elementary and High School, graduating with the class of 1966. Growing up in Hudson gave Johnny wonderful lasting memories of small-town living. But he was also ready to go out into the world after graduation, so he joined the United States Navy on December 8th, 1966.
Johnny, a proud Vietnam Veteran, was stationed all over the world. He went to boot camp in San Diego, California at the Naval Training Center. Johnny lived and served in Okinawa, Guam, Japan, and Hawaii. While he was stationed in Guam, Johnny met Jae Soon, who became his wife on March 13th, 1980. Johnny worked his way through the military ranks, starting out as an enlisted man and when he retired from his 28-year naval career, he had earned the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Johnny and his entire family were very proud of his career and military service. Johnny's last command was at Pearl Harbor-Hickam Naval Base in Hawaii. After his retirement, he and his wife decided to make Aiea, Hawaii their home. Johnny did not stay retired for long, and he went to work for the Department of Defense in Hawaii. He stayed in this position for several years.
Johnny, who had a deep faith, was very active at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Aiea, where he served as a lector for many years. He was active in the V.F.W. and other veteran endeavors. He was the President of the board for the large apartment complex where he and his wife lived. It is a must to mention that Johnny was a lifelong Chicago Bears fan. He even flew from Hawaii to Chicago to see his beloved Bears play! Johnny also loved the water, and swam in the ocean two or three miles, every day. He enjoyed telling people about the marine life he would come across while out for a swim. He came across stingrays, manta rays, sea turtles, monk seals, and dolphins but we never heard about him seeing any sharks!
John Scott, a small-town boy, lived life large and carried with him many wonderful memories of people, places, and experiences. He will be missed immensely by his family and friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jae Soon of Aiea, Hawaii; his sister, Paula (Lonnie) Toft of Summerville, South Carolina.; and several nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Clayre Scott; brother, Charles “Chic” Scott; sister, Luanne Thorpe; and nieces, Tiffany Toft and Tracy Thorpe.
