Hudson, SD: Margaret E. Koopsma, 92, of Hudson, South Dakota, died Saturday, September 15, 2018. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 21, at 1:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church of rural Hudson with Rev. Nathan Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran North Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Thursday, September 20, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Hudson Community Center in Hudson. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Hudson Community Center.
Margaret Elaine Koopsma, daughter of Elmer and Hilda (Olson) Thoreson, was born September 1, 1926 at Corson, South Dakota. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Following high school, Margaret graduated from cosmetology school in Sioux Falls and worked in a beauty shop in Sioux Falls until her marriage to Richard Koopsma on January 15, 1950 at Split Rock Church in rural Corson. Together the couple farmed west of Hudson, South Dakota. Richard died April 13, 1990.
Margaret was a wonderful cook and will be remembered for her lefse, doughnuts, and sugar cookies. She was an avid crocheter and made many afghans, baby blankets and doilies over the years. After Richard’s death, Margaret enjoyed traveling with her cousins and going on many bus trips. She also enjoyed swimming in Sioux Center and going to the Hudson Community Center for lunch, coffee, and playing cards.
She is survived by her 5 children, Carol (Michael) McGaffee of Sioux Falls, David (Julie) Koopsma of Canton, South Dakota, Don (Denise) Koopsma of Hudson, Joan (Steve) Fagerness of Sioux Falls, and Dianne (Chuck) Smith of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Terri (Larry) Turner of Omaha, Nebraska and Ilene (Grant) Evanson of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and her cousin Marge’s husband, Vic Hanson.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Hilda; husband, Richard; 3-year-old sister, Carol Jean Thoreson; great-grandson, Bob Trumm; and 2 special cousins, Marge Hanson and Virginia Hengelfelt.
