Margaret Jane (Horst) Pry passed away on March 30, 2026, surrounded by loving family and under the care of Orange City Home Health and Hospice at the age of 85 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Father Mauro Sanchez officiating. Inurnment will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery, with a luncheon and time of visitation with the family at the church hall after the committal service. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. Margaret’s family prefers memorials be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in her memory.
Margaret Jane (Horst) Pry was born on November 29, 1940, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Charles and Geneva Horst. Margaret attended school in Sanborn, Iowa, where she grew up and met her high school sweetheart, Harold Pry. Harold and Margaret were married on February 7, 1959, in Elk Point, South Dakota.
Margaret was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her husband and seven children. Her home was always open to anyone in need of a meal, and she had a special talent for making a pound of hamburger feed a small village. She was especially known for her fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy, her mashed potatoes and gravy were a favorite of many. Margaret enjoyed working on puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and keeping a tidy and well-organized home.
After her children were in full-time school, Margaret went to work at Coilcraft in Hawarden, where she met many lifelong friends and worked for 20 years. She was a member of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed volunteering at the thrift store supporting the building of the new hospital.
She was proud of her Catholic faith, deeply cherished her family, and took great pride in living in Hawarden, where she loved her close-knit community. Margaret was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Margaret is survived by her seven children: Teresa Anderson of Amissville, Virginia, Glen (Louise) Pry of Overland Park, Kansas, Charlene (Kent) Brown of Somers, Iowa, Brenda (Bryan) Nohava of Hawarden, Iowa, Jeannie Pry Critelli of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Diane DaCosta of Safety Harbor, Florida, and Harold (Kelly) Pry Jr. of Hawarden, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, soon to be 20 great grandchildren with baby Dane do in a few weeks; and one great-great-grandchild.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Pry; her parents, Charles and Geneva Horst; her sisters, Kathryn Stallman, Mary Jungers, and Norene Petrick; her brother, James Horst; and a grandson, Ethan Pry.
