Margie Vanden Toorn of Hull, IA, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2022 at Pleasant Acres Care Center of Hull.  Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Reformed Church of Rock Valley, with Rev. B. Elshout of Heritage Reformed Congregation along with Rev. Greg Lubbers officiating.  Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley.  Visitation with the family present, will be held Tuesday, September 6 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley. The funeral service will be livestreamed at faithrv.com.

Margie Vanden Toorn, daughter of John and Sadie (Van Abbema) Hoogendoorn, was born November 1, 1930.  She grew up in the Lester, IA area and attended country school through the eighth grade.  Margie married Arthur Van Veldhuizen on February 15, 1950 in Rock Valley, IA.  The couple farmed east of Doon, IA where they raised their 3 children.  Later they moved to a farm near Alvord, IA.  She was a devoted farmwife and mother.  Her husband, Arthur, died on June 30, 1977 at the age of 50 years after a short illness.  Arthur and Margie were members of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Rock Valley.

On November 29, 1980 she married Marvin Vanden Toorn of Grand Rapids, MI in Rock Valley, IA.  The couple then made their home in Grand Rapids, where she again became wife and homemaker, as well as stepmother and grandmother to Marvin’s family.  Along with doing volunteer work at their church, Margie enjoyed making many trips back to Iowa to visit her children and grandchildren.  Marvin died on May 14, 2011 at the age of 88.  Marvin and Margie were members of the Heritage Reformed Congregation of Grand Rapids.

After the death of her second husband, she moved back to Iowa, and took up residence at The Homestead in Sioux Center where she resided until moving to Riverview Ridge Assisted Living in Rock Valley in 2021.  Because of age-related infirmities she was moved to Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, IA where she resided until her death. 

Margie is survived by her 3 children:  Sally (Arlin) Post of Doon, IA, Carolyn (Karlin) Bleeker of Sioux Center, IA, and Larry (Pam) Van Veldhuizen of Sioux Center, IA; 19 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, along with 2 great, great grandchildren.  Her stepchildren: Howard (Karen) Vanden Toorn, Sue (George) Lubbers, and Russ (Carol) Vanden Toorn, all of Michigan, along with 10 step-grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Her sister,  Sadie (Albert) Schelling of Orange City, IA; sisters-in-law, Hermina Van Veldhuizen, Bernice Van Veldhuizen, Cornelia Hoogendoorn, Arlene Hoogendoorn, and Peggy Hoogendoorn, all of Rock Valley, IA and Barb Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids, IA; and brother-in-law, Frank Wynia of Rock Rapids, IA.

Preceding her in death were two husbands, Arthur and Marvin; grandson, Russell Post; great-grandson, Isaac Chase; her parents, John and Sadie Hoogendoorn; parents-in-law, Aart and Cornelia Van Veldhuizen; brothers, Gilbert, Alvin, John, and Ted Hoogendoorn; sisters, Henrietta Davelaar, Joan Van Veldhuizen, Nellie Burnette, Mary Ann Maassen-Wynia, and step-grandson, Michael Maartense.
