He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1957 and served in the Navy for two years, stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. Marty married the love of his life, Frances Bernhardt, on December 5, 1959. They made their life-long home in Ireton, Iowa. Marty worked his adult life in the agricultural business and owned the G&S feed store until his retirement in 1995. Throughout his life, Marty maintained a strong relationship with his faith, and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton for most of his married life until he and Fran moved to Sioux Falls in 2017.

He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, and camping with his family and friends as well as watching sports of any kind. He was known in the family for the best barbecue ribs. Before his passing he was able to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary in Sun City West with Fran and his children, grandchildren, great-grandson and other family.

Our deepest sympathy to Fran, Dawn & David:

I knew Marty through my folks, Ron & Marlene Hanstein, however, only I knew him as "Uncle Marty"! He was an amazing storyteller, his personality larger than life and his generosity and kindness put him in a class by himself. We spent time with him at Ft. Randall, Lake Shetek and various other places. He and Fran came out to Las Vegas with us when Darvin and I got married in 1995. The belly laughs were abundant when he was around and I know my folks had so many great times with them. We are very sorry for your loss. He will never be forgotten!
