Rock Valley, IA: Marvin James Hoogendoorn, 91, of Rock Valley, Iowa, passed away Monday, August 3, 2026, at Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 7, at 10:30 AM at the Rock Valley First Reformed Church with Rev. Dr. Cliff Hoekstra officiating. The service can be livestreamed at https://www.rvfrc.org/. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be held Thursday, August 6, from 5:30-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.
Marvin James Hoogendoorn, son of James John and Hattie (Van Abbema) Hoogendoorn, was born January 11, 1935, at the Hoogendoorn family farm near Lester, Iowa. Marv grew up helping on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. On June 10, 1955, Marv was united in marriage with Ella Van Roekel at the First Reformed Church in Hull, Iowa. The couple was blessed with 5 children, Debbra, Bonnie, Marlan, Bobby, and Darrell. Over the years Marv spent time farming, driving truck, and working as a machinist.
Marv enjoyed being a hobbyist and he held many hobbies over the years which included tractor pulls, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and go-carts, but his favorite hobbies may have been starting MARVELLAS Hitches & Footrests where he designed parts for motorcycles and building toy barns, 134 of them to be exact. Marv also enjoyed camping and volunteering at Hope Haven. He was a longtime member of Rock Valley First Reformed Church.
Marv is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ella Hoogendoorn; 5 children, Debbra (Dan) Claussen of Rock Valley, Bonnie (Edward) Welbig of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Marlan (Bonnie) Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Bobby (Marisella) Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, and Darrell (Shaun) Hoogendoorn of Ireton, Iowa;17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 6 siblings, Alvin Hoogendoorn, Margie Van Tilburg, Sylvia Fluit, Arlene (Henry) Hoefakker, Bernice Van Veldhuizen, and James (Margaret) Hoogendoorn.
Marv was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hattie; parents-in-law, Jake and Henrietta Van Roekel; brother, Gilbert (Hermina) Hoogendoorn; sister, Henrietta (William) Vande Waerdt; sister-in-law, Edith “Dolly” Hoogendoorn; and 4 brothers-in-law, Tom Van Tilburg, Wilmer Fluit, Leonard Klarenbeek, and Cornelius Van Veldhuizen.
