HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Pearl Jeanette Kooima, 96, fulfilled her baptismal journey on Tuesday, August 29, 2023.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Nate Kuperus of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service or at the luncheon. The funeral service will be live streamed at http://livestream/hawardencrc. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. The family prefers memorials be directed to the Orange City Home Health and Hospice or to the organization of your choice.
Pearl Jeanette Kooima was born on March 13, 1927, to John and Dora (Westra) Van Dyke. She was raised on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa and later moved to Inwood, Iowa. She graduated from Inwood High School and attended Sioux Falls College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught all 8 grades in a one room rural school.
Pearl was united in marriage to Clarence Kooima on June 4th, 1947. They farmed near Hudson, South Dakota until 1971. To this union, five daughters were born. They later moved to Hawarden, Iowa where Pearl was employed by the Hawarden Community Hospital. She retired in 1991.
She was a longtime member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School, and also was a member of Ruth Circle and the Dorcas Society. She volunteered at the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store.
Clarence, her loving husband, passed away in 1995. She later moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she attended the Sioux Falls First Christian Reformed Church.
In 2015 Pearl returned to Hawarden where she made her home at Oakhill Assisted Living.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and going on vacations, gatherings, and reunions.
Survivors include her daughters, Dorinda (Howard) Van Engen of Hawarden, Barbara (Harry) Kibler of Minneapolis, Kansas, Paula Parkin of St, Louis, Missouri, Julie (Larry) Hulstein Overman of Le Mars, Iowa, and Judy Peters of Summerville, South Carolina; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a sister, June Ver Burg of Sioux Falls.
Pearl was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Garrett Van Dyke and John Duane Van Dyke in infancy; sisters, Johanna Kleinwolterink, Margaret Franken, and Dorothy Fedders; and two sons-in-law, Steven Parkin and David Peters.
