Lyle Thompson

Peter Lyle Thompson passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the age of 92 of natural causes at Hawarden Regional Healthcare.

   Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2022, at United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church and also at the luncheon following the committal service. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. 

   Lyle was born in Hawarden, Iowa on November 6, 1929, to Peter Lars and Ruth (Rifenbark) Thompson. He was welcomed home by his three sisters Millie, Marge, and Lura.

   Lyle graduated from Hawarden High School in 1948. He began his career working at Younie’s Market as a butcher at 16 years old and retired at 83. The only time Lyle lived away from Hawarden was while he proudly served his country for two years as an MP in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

   Lyle married Janet Ruth McDiarmid on June 3, 1962. They had three children, Jim, Joan, and Bill. Lyle was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. He was the best father anyone could ask for and while we are eternally grateful for all the time we have had with him, he will be missed dearly.

   Lyle is survived by his children Jim and Dana (Palmer) Thompson of Sioux City, Iowa, Joan Thompson of Erie, Colorado and Bill and Sharla (Vanden Top) Thompson of Le Mars, Iowa; his sister Lura (Thompson) Gayer of Sioux Center, Iowa; a brother-in-law Bob and Colleen McDiarmid of San Jose, California. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

   Lyle was proceeded in death by his father, mother, wife, two sisters, three brothers-in-law and a nephew.
