Hudson, SD: Ramona Joyce Schlup, 91, of Hudson, SD, passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Sanford Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD. A visitation with family present will be held at Porter Funeral Home in Hudson, SD on Friday, August 30, from 5:30-7:00 PM with a prayer service following at 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 31, at 11:00 AM at the Hawarden United Methodist Church in Hawarden, IA, with Pastor Samuel Ansong officiating. A lunch at the church will follow the service with a family burial service at Eden Cemetery, Hudson, SD following lunch. The Memorial Service will be recorded and available on the church Face Book Page.
Memorials can be given to Placerville Camp, UCC (https://www.placervillecamp.net/). Porter Funeral of Hudson & Hawarden is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ramona Joyce (Wood) Schlup, daughter of Frederick Wren and Gertie (Speelman) Wood, was born July 19, 1933, on a farm in Sioux County, Iowa, with her family. She attended Garfield #5 Country School for her elementary education and graduated from Hudson High School in May of 1951.
Ramona was united in marriage to Richard Schlup on June 8th, 1951, at the First Congregational Church in Hudson, SD. She lived in Hudson after marriage, purchasing their home in 1953.
Ramona worked at Otis Radio/Coilcraft for 37 years. After retirement she was a senior companion for 13 years. She was active in the UCC/Congregational Church, serving on several committees. Ramona was recognized as an Outstanding Woman Leader of SD UCC Conference for the National UCC Officer Synod. After Hudson United Church of Christ Church closed, she became a member of the Hawarden United Methodist Church.
Ramona was active in the Hudson community and was very well versed in the history of the town. Her activities included service as an EMT, Hudson Ambulance Charter Member, Hudson Firemen’s Auxiliary, SD State Fireman’s Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary for over 70 years, Garden Club, and delivering Meals on Wheels. Ramona enjoyed Bunko and playing cards at the Senior Center.
Ramona is survived by her three children, Sandra (Alan) Woods of Leavenworth, KS, Daniel (Brenda) Schlup of Hudson, SD, and Robert (Beth) Schlup, of Sioux Falls, SD; Seven grandchildren, Aaron and Ethan Woods of Leavenworth, KS, Christopher Schlup of Spearfish, SD, Katie (Jared) Farley of Sartell, MN, Laura (Christopher) Koelker of Sioux Falls, SD, Allison (Jake) Harris of Sioux Falls, SD, and Marissa (Anthony) Dyk of Sioux Falls, SD; twelve great-grandchildren, Mason, Madelynn, and McKenna Schlup, Zakaryah, Zaiden, and Zandria Farley, Hudson, Grace, and Micah Koelker, and Avery, Casey, and Olivia Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Ramona was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schlup; parents Wren and Gertie Wood; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Howard Hermanson; and brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Jeanne Wood.
