Ronald Lee Zylstra

Inwood, IA: Ronald Lee Zylstra, 75, of Inwood, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at his home, following a long and hard fought battle with cancer. A private family memorial service will be held at Porter Funeral Home in Inwood with Pastor Rob Horstman officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to Sanford Hospice, Sheldon, Iowa or First Reformed Church of Inwood.

Ronald Lee Zylstra, son of Fred and Gertrude (Addink) Zylstra, was born June 20, 1944 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Ron attended and graduated from Sioux Center High School. On November 6, 1964, Ron was united in marriage with Karen Faye Boone. Together the couple lived in Orange City, Iowa from 1964-1975 until moving to Inwood, Iowa where they have lived ever since. Ron served as a Deputy for the Lyon County Sheriff’s office for 34 years.

Ron loved gardening, working in his yard, woodworking, feeding birds, and photography. He was very handy and enjoyed helping his children with home improvement projects of their own.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Karen; 3 sons, Scott (Kelli) Zylstra of Rock Valley, Iowa, Timothy (Ronna) Zylstra of Omaha, Nebraska, and Matthew (Natalie) Zylstra of Fairfax, Virginia; 7 grandchildren, Christopher (Megan), Michael, Nicholas, Taylor, Jenna, Keegan, and Logan; great-grandson, Mason; and brother, Doug (Fran) Zylstra of Loveland, Colorado. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Gertrude.

Very sorry to hear about Ron. My grandma, Dean Addink DeGooyer, was his mothers cousin.

I always enjoyed visiting with you 2 when you were regulars at the Health Food Store in Sioux Falls. Ron was a good family man & lived a good fruitful life. You have my sympathy now & in the days ahead as you cope with the departure of your soul mate.

I've thought of you and Ron so often over the last few months, most recently this week when a Northern Flicker flew head long into my picture window. I knew Ron would have enjoyed talking about the birds with me. I'll continue to hold you and your family in my prayers.

My sympathy Karen and family. Years ago I was landscaping in the front yard and he came with his cop car and helped me dig and plant. I realized that what an expert gardener he was and would stop many again with good advice. Thinking he is gardening in the most perfect garden yet to be seen.
