Ruth Mae Halma

Inwood, IA: Ruth Mae Halma, 88, of Inwood, Iowa, died Monday, October 21, 2019, at Fellowship Village in Inwood. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, at 10:00 AM at Inwood Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Adam Eisenga officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery of Inwood. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Friday, October 25, from 5:30-7:30 PM at Porter Funeral Home in Inwood.

Ruth Mae Halma, daughter of Henry and Frances (Vanden Bosch) De Wit, was born October 14, 1931, in Worthington, Minnesota. Ruth grew up in Rock Valley, Iowa until her family moved to Inwood, Iowa later in her childhood. Ruth was united in marriage with Martin Halma at the Inwood Christian Reformed Church on June 1, 1951. Together the couple farmed and operated a dairy near Inwood. The couple moved to town in 1994. In their retirement years, Ruth and Martin enjoyed traveling with Ruth’s siblings. Martin passed away on September 1, 2014.

In addition to helping on the farm, Ruth worked as a janitor for several years at the Inwood Christian School. She also went on to obtain her GED and then worked at the Canton-Inwood Hospital as a Dietary Supervisor. Ruth enjoyed sewing, decorating cakes for all occasions and she was an avid doll collector. While volunteering at Justice For All, Ruth would take and refurbish dolls to give to little girls. She would often say, “every girl deserves a doll.” Ruth served as a Calvinette leader and was a member of the Inwood Christian Reformed Church.

Ruth is survived by her 8 children, Ron Halma of Phoenix, Arizona, Harlan Halma of Inwood, LeAnn (Kevin) Soldatke of Harrisburg, South Dakota, Jean (Dennis) Boote of Fairview, South Dakota, Verlyn Halma of Inwood, Lori (Elmer) Boon of Rock Valley, Myron (Sue) Halma of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Dan Halma of Larchwood, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Lee (Don) Jongerius, Gert (Cornie) Hibma, and Linda (Simon) Kooiman; and 3 brothers, John (Greta) De Wit, Martin “Bud” De Wit, and Ed De Wit.

Preceding Ruth in death were her parents, Henry and Frances; husband, Martin; infant daughter, Lisa; sisters-in-law, Joy and Mona De Wit; and brother-in-law, Ed Driesen.
