Rock Valley, IA: Shelly Smit, 61, died Monday, May 19, 2025, as a result of injuries sustained in a house fire near Rock Valley. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rock Valley. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.

   Shelly Rose was born on December 21, 1963, in Canton, SD, to Millard and Mildred (Johnson) Hyronemus. She attended Sioux Center Schools.

   Shelly was united in marriage to Brian Bouma on May 23, 1987, at the Wayside Chapel by Sioux Center and to this union Ashley was born. They later divorced. On September 12, 2009, she married Michael Smit at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rock Valley and to this union Zachery was born. They later divorced.

   Shelly lived in various towns in Northwest Iowa and worked at Groschopp, Coilcraft, Rock Industries, and as a cashier at various places.

   Shelly enjoyed living on the farm and being outdoors, gardening, cooking, baking, keeping an immaculate house, coloring, reading books, and collecting baby dolls. She was a member of the Lutheran Church. She unconditionally loved her children and family. Her laugh was contagious, and she was always willing to step up and offer help. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

   Survivors include children: Ashley (Kyle) Swets of Sanborn, IA, Zachery Smit (Courtney Carroll) of Sioux Center, IA; grandchildren: Katelyn, Kyzer, Kasper, Kaden, Bentley, Kaysen; brothers: Richard Hyronemus of Inwood, IA, Steve (Carmen) Hyronemus of Alton, IA, John Hyronemus of Rock Valley, IA, and Robert (Gwen) Hyronemus of Grand Island, NE; sisters: Linda Olsen (Denny Heien) of Hartley, IA, Debby (David) Miles of Worthing, SD, Lorri Dykstra of Rock Valley, IA, and Sandi (Art) Vander Waal of Everson, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Allen (Gloria) Hyronemus; nephews: Quentin Hyronemus, Cody Hyronemus and Chad Hyronemus.
