Rock Valley, IA: Sherwin Jay Van Kekerix, 75 of Rock Valley, Iowa passed away on November 30, 2023, at Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Fort Meade, South Dakota, following a brief battle with cancer. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 6, from 2:00-7:00 PM with family present from 5:00-7:00 at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 7, at 10:30 AM at Trinity CRC. The service can be livestreamed at https://trinitycrc.com/. Private family burial with military rites will be held prior to the service at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley.

 

   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hope Haven, Justice for All, or the Wounded Warrior Project. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

 

   Sherwin Jay Van Kekerix was born September 22, 1948, in Le Mars, Iowa to Bill and Tena (Van Holland) Van Kekerix. He attended grade school at Rock Valley Christian, high school at Hull Western Christian and graduated from Dordt College. Following high school, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and served one tour in Viet Nam. 

 

   In 1969 Sherwin married Deloris (Lori) De Boer. They lived in the Rock Valley area where they raised their three children, Steve, Seth, and Kayla. He enjoyed a career as an IT and computer programmer, working for Hope Haven and for Team Management/Jack Henry & Assoc. as one of the founding partners. In later years, he enjoyed volunteering his services for various local ministries. Most recently, he enjoyed their 2nd home in the Black Hills. 

 

   Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lori; 3 children, Steve (Teresa) of Melvin, Iowa, Seth of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Kayla (friend Jeremy Garner) of Des Moines, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Shealyn, Maddox, Daneyl, Sierra, and Ayden; 2 great grandchildren, Camden and Rylee; brother, Eugene Van Kekerix (Marge) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister, Barbara Van Otterloo (Sherwin) of Rock Valley, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ken De Boer, Macon, Missouri; 4 sisters-in-law, Hermina Louwerse of Orange City, Iowa, Marge Van Kekerix of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Donna Walters of Madison, South Dakota, and Arlis De Boer of Sioux Center, Iowa; and many nephews, nieces, and a host of friends.

 

   Sherwin was preceded in death by his parents, Bill & Tena Van Kekerix; parents-in-law, John and Dorothy De Boer; sister, Marlys Van Kekerix; 3 brothers-in-law, Ivan De Boer, George Walters, and Ken Louwerse; and sister-in-law, Gloria De Boer.
