Susan Carine Anderson was born on April 24, 1965, to James and Dorothy Anderson in Hawarden, Iowa. Susan, known to her friends and family as Susie, was welcomed home by her older brother Timmer and soon she would welcome her younger brother Farrell. She attended West Sioux Community Schools and graduated from high school in 1983. While a student at West Sioux, Susie participated in many activities from chorus to softball, basketball and football student manager. However, she enjoyed and excelled the most as a member of the Falcon girl’s golf team collecting numerous medalists and runner-up finishes during her high school career.
Susie began her college academics at Iowa State University in the fall of 1983 and graduated in 1987 from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She began her 29-year career with Citi Bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as a customer service representative. She would go on to hold prominent management roles with the company at various locations until she retired in 2017 as the site President for the Citi Statement Printing Operations in Urbandale, Iowa.
Susie’s most cherished and fulfilling role was simply being Aunt Susie to her three nieces Olivia Newton (Timmer), Taylor Sawatski (Timmer), Chloe DeYoung (Farrell) and two nephews Elliott and Wyatt Anderson (Farrell). They would all agree that Aunt Susie made them feel special and unfortunately any bad language they learned likely was heard while as passengers when Aunt Susie was driving them around in the car.
Susie’s passion, love and support for her family was unwavering and brought her immense fulfillment. Susie truly enjoyed being a part of her nieces and nephews’ lives and staying connected and taking great pride watching them grow into their own lives. Susie had special relationships with her two sisters-in-law, Tonya Hotze and Merry Anderson and Susie was ever thankful that Tonya included her in the lives of Olivia and Taylor after the passing of their father Timmer.
On August 9, 2010, Susie married her high school sweetheart, David Gebauer at the Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple resided in West Des Moines, Iowa for 9 years and not long after her retirement from Citi, Susan began working with her husband in the business they owned. Later when the couple sold their business interest in 2019, they embarked on a new chapter of their lives moving to the retirement community of Sun City West, Arizona where they enjoyed golfing together, cold beverages and amazing sunsets.
Susie excelled at building relationships and was known as a strong independent woman with a huge heart. She also built caring relationships with her three stepdaughters offering unconditional love and support. Susie never wanted the spotlight but rather built a life of service. Her instincts were friendly, motherly and to be the gatekeeper for her family while trying to protect and support those that she loved and cared for. She was a straight shooter and an Iowa State supporter and super fan. Go Cyclones! She will forever be missed but warmly and fondly remembered by her family. Susie passed away on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, Arizona, while holding David’s hand.
Susan was welcomed to heaven by her brother Timmer, father Jim, and mother Dorothy.
She is survived by her husband, David Gebauer of Sun City West, Arizona; her stepdaughters, Allie Gebauer and husband Casey Snyder of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Hannah Gebauer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Michaela Carper and husband Chris Carper; brother, Farrell Anderson and wife Merry of Canton, South Dakota; sister-in-law, (Timmer) Tonya Hotze and husband Brian of Carlisle, Iowa; her nieces and nephews, Olivia, Taylor, Chloe, Elliott, and Wyatt.
