Therese DeHaan, 95, passed away on June 05, 2025, at the Akron Care Center, Akron, Iowa.
A Private Family Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Parish, St Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa, with Father Roger Linnan officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, Iowa. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.
Therese was born on February 17, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Fred and Josephine Grace. She went to elementary school at Fairview, SD, high school in Garretson and Brandon, SD, and graduated from Brandon, SD in 1948. She married Donald R. DeHaan on October 30, 1950, and they lived in Rock Rapids, Iowa where they operated a gas station, bulk tank service, and motel, and Don worked at Lyon County State Bank. They moved to Marcus, Iowa and Cherokee, Iowa where Don worked at Central Trust and Savings Bank and operated a Schwinn bicycle shop. They moved to Hawarden, Iowa where Therese worked at Fiesta Foods and Don worked at First State Bank. They were married for 44 years when Don passed away on June 02, 1995.
Don and Therese have five children: Patricia Hackett, Sioux Falls, SD, Jacqueline (Greg) Thompson, Hawarden, IA, Douglas (Renee) DeHaan, LeMars, IA, and Kathleen (Brian) Brodie, Sioux Falls, SD. Their daughter, Tamara Kunze, passed away on July 25, 2019.
They have 12 grandchildren: Kellen (Kathy) Hackett, Alesha Hackett, Jesse (Kassie) Boyer, Jared (Kassy) Boyer, Angela (Chad) Wurth, Scott (Tristen) Thompson, Robert Brodie, Scott Brodie, Sonja Kunze, Joshua Kunze, and Ethan Kunze. Their grandson, Matthew DeHaan, passed away on January 11, 2020.
They have 15 great grandchildren: Noah, Faith, and Ariel Hackett; Seaton and Gracynn Boyer; Beckett Boyer; Maddyson and Samantha Johnson; Liam and Layla Brodie; Caden, Alexa, and Blake Wurth; Micah and Brooklyn Thompson.
Therese is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Grace, and many nieces and nephews.
Therese was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, enjoyed playing golf with Don and her friends, knitted many afghans and dish cloths, baked delicious cinnamon rolls and almond logs, canned homegrown tomatoes, made spicey salsa, and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Therese worked at the Fiesta Foods grocery store until her retirement in 1998. She loved watching golf on tv and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Donald, Tamara Kunze (daughter), Matthew DeHaan (grandson), Fred and Josephine Grace (her parents), Harry & Jessie DeHaan (Don's father & step-mother), Harriet DeHaan (Don's mother), Frances Grace (her brother), Dick & Katherine Nelson (her sister and husband), Paul & Lorraine Derrick (her sister and husband), and Howard & Jo Brown (her sister and husband), Ben & Helen DeHaan (Don's brother & wife), and Al & Genevieve Heeren (Don's sister & husband), and several nieces and nephews, and very close friends.
