ALCESTER, SOUTH DAKOTA ~ Virginia “Ginger” Marie Waterman, 76, of Alcester, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2026, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Father Mauro Sanchez officiating. Following a luncheon, the committal will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester, South Dakota. Public viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Following the viewing, her body will be cremated. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Virginia “Ginger” Marie Waterman was born December 29, 1949, in Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Donald and Corrine (Roth) Johnson. She received her education in Fordyce, Nebraska and Beresford, South Dakota. She married Myron D. Waterman of Hawarden, Iowa on October 8, 1966, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Beresford. The family spent their early days in Hawarden and moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1984. Ginger and Myron made their home in Amarillo for 37 years. Myron passed away in 2019, and after selling her home, Ginger then moved to Alcester, South Dakota.
She was proud of her careers, working at Homeland Grocery Stores for 17 years and especially proud of her time working with the veterans at the Veterans Administration in Amarillo for 12 years. Ginger received many awards and merits from the VA. While living in Amarillo, she was very active in her church, serving as President of the ladies’ group twice.
Ginger is survived by her 4 children, Matt Waterman of Gilbert, Arizona, Chris Waterman of Hawarden, Iowa, Aaron (Heather) Waterman of Amarillo, Texas, and Niki (Robbie) Harriss of Cleveland, Tennessee; grandchildren, Matt’s child Giovanni of San Antonio, Texas, Chris’ child Ada of Orange City, Iowa, Aaron’s children Daxton of Barksdale, Louisiana and Kingsley of Amarillo, Texas, and Niki’s children Grace of Cleveland, Tennessee, Colten of Seattle, Washington, and Trinity of Athens, Tennessee; and her two sisters, Gloria Thompson of Alcester, South Dakota and Judy Ann Westover of Hawarden, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; and sister, Mary Kay Dimmick.
