Virginia "Granny" Elaine Moothart

HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Virginia Elaine Moothart, “Granny” 86, of Hawarden, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden, Iowa.

      • Memorial Service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Hawarden Community Center in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Michael Boothby, of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday or at the luncheon following the service. Private family inurnment will be at Grace Hill Cemetery prior to the visitation. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The Memorial Service will be recorded and uploaded to Virginia’s obituary page. Her family prefers memorials to be directed to the Hawarden Public Library.

Virginia Elaine Moothart was born July 4, 1938, in Clarno Township, near Madison, South Dakota, the daughter of Detlef and Nellie (Reynolds) Johannsen. She grew up in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 1956. She married Gerald Moothart on February 4, 1957, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Madison. They made their home in Garvin, Minnesota before moving to Groton, South Dakota. The family moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1966. Virginia was employed at Streit Pharmacy and later at the Hawarden Public Library. She was a bank teller for many years at Farmer’s State Bank until her retirement.

Virginia was very active in Women’s Clubs and the Women’s Bowling League and served as a leader in both the Boy Scouts and also the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed reading, painting, crafting, gardening, and traveling. Virginia was an avid sports fan, a great supporter of West Sioux Athletics, and was honored to be named the Fan of the Year at West Sioux. She never missed her children’s activities as they grew up and she loved to watch her grandkids in all of their activities. Virginia loved family get togethers and her family was the most important thing in her life.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald on May 16, 1977; son-in-law, Robert Johnson; her parents, Detlef and Nellie Johannsen; parents-in-law, George and Ann Moothart; and other relatives, Raymond Johannsen, Lloyd and Darlene Whilethorn, Gunnar and Della Magnuson, Roy and Hazel Johannsen, Lyman and Marge Moothart, Elton and Sharon Schlim, Raymond Moothart, Arnold Burmeister, and Ruth Johannsen.
