Maxine Jane Hansen

Rock Valley, IA: Maxine Jane Hansen, 87, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Friday, November 28, 2025, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center, Iowa. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 4, at 10:30 AM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. The service will be available for livestream at https://www.porterfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/maxine-hansen. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 AM at the funeral home.

   Maxine Jane Hansen, daughter of Dick and Dora (Kroese) Van Beek, was born September 6, 1938, at Rock Valley, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in Rock Valley. Maxine met Loren Hansen while roller skating in Rock Rapids, Iowa. They were united in marriage on December 15, 1954, at Rock Valley First Reformed Church. Maxine remained in Rock Valley as Loren went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon Loren’s return, the couple made their home on a farm near Rock Valley.

   Maxine worked the front desk at Felco Co-op Elevator Company until starting Hansen Realty where she worked as a real estate broker and sold insurance. Maxine was a strong-willed, spirited woman who lived life with purpose and joy. She had a sharp mind and loved the challenge of a good card game, especially with the Bridge Clubs she belonged to. Maxine enjoyed time on the golf course, evenings spent at local theater productions, and any chance to gather with friends.

   To her family, she was lovingly known as Grandma Grizzly, a devoted grandmother who showed up with pride, love, and a little bit of that trademark toughness. She was also a loyal fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings, cheering her teams on season after season.

   Maxine is survived by her 3 sons and their wives, Roger (Sherri) Hansen of McCook Lake, South Dakota, David (Maureen) Hansen of Rock Valley, and Curtis (Becky) Hansen of Raleigh, North Carolina; 5 grandchildren, Jamie (Paul) Bruns, Kyle (Veronica) Leesen, Jerod (Katie) Hansen, Reagan Hansen, and Emerson Hansen; 5 great-grandchildren, Paul C. Bruns, Isaac Bruns, Luke Bruns, Aaron Bruns, and Benson Hansen; and 2 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Slinde and Janet Bush.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Dora; husband, Loren; sisters and their husbands, Arlene and Bill Van Den Top and Elsie and Ed Kooima; brother, George Van Beek and his wife, Anna Marie; and brothers-in-law, Jim Bush, Jim Slinde, and Warren Emmons and his wife, Lois.
